This fall and spring, thirty-four new full-time faculty members will join the Arts and Sciences community, spanning the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences divisions, the School of the Arts, and the School of Professional Studies. Each will bring their immense talents into Columbia’s classrooms, laboratories, and studio spaces, and continue the long tradition of excellence in teaching and research at the heart of the Arts and Sciences mission.
“Our faculty are the lifeblood of A&S and the University,” said Amy E. Hungerford, Dean and Executive Vice President of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. “We are so excited to welcome them and look forward to all the ways they will enrich our students’ lives, expand their educational horizons, contribute to campus life and community, and extend Columbia’s field-defining scholarship.”
New faculty include professors of all ranks as well as practice faculty and lecturers in discipline. Among the new tenured faculty is Susanna Berger, a scholar of sixteenth and seventeenth century art and architecture, who will serve as the Walter Burke Associate Professor of Art History. Also joining A&S, in the Department of English and Comparative Literature, is Riley Snorton, a cultural theorist who focuses on racial, sexual, and transgender histories and cultural productions. Lori Flores, a historian of Latino/x life, labor, and politics in the United States, will join the Department of History and serve as core faculty at the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race (CSER). The Department of Mathematics will welcome Soren Galatius, a scholar of algebraic and geometric topology. Natalie Brito, a leading researcher on brain and behavioral development in young children, will join the Department of Psychology and direct the Infant Studies of Learning and Neurocognitive Development (ISLAND) lab. And Chloe Kitzinger, a scholar of the Russian, European, and American novel, will join the Department of Slavic Languages.
Within the School of the Arts, four new faculty join Columbia in the areas of film, writing, and theatre arts, including James Ijames, Pulitzer Prize winning and Tony Award nominated playwright, director, and educator; and Angie Cruz, award winning novelist and editor. The School of Professional Studies welcomes new faculty to its American Language Program.
